Advanced Technical Solutions Launches Microzone Publishing

Triblocal.com goes live!

Dynamic content aggregation and targeted publishing for Print

Orlando, FL, April 19, 2007 - Advanced Technical Solutions (ATS) of Acton, MA, a leading supplier of publishing solutions, announced today the general availability of its Microzone Publishing Solution. This solution is all about growth for newspapers, enabling them to create new products and revenue streams, as they compete in a changing media environment.

Newspapers can now deliver targeted, relevant content to targeted local markets economically through branded community websites, and associated print products. Citizen journalists can now contribute stories, articles, events and photos for publishing on their community websites and in their community newspapers.

Based on their newly formed partnership, ATS and Eastman Kodak Company will jointly market, sell and support this revolutionary publishing solution as the KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution. Both Kodak and ATS people will be involved in the sales and support activity.

The ATS Microzone Publishing Solution consists of three components that can be used as an integrated unit or function independently. The Microzone Citizen Journalism Portal allows local citizen journalists to submit stories, photographs and community event listings for use in print and online products. This component has been built on a platform supplied by Creative Circle Advertising Solutions, Inc., of Providence, RI.

The Microzone Advertising Portal enables advertisers to create and place ads, as well as manage and store the ads they create, and pay for the media space using a secure credit card system. This component has been built on a platform supplied by Bluefin, LLC of Orange County, CA. Both of these components will be delivered as ASP's.

The Microzone Publishing Management System enables newspaper publishers to assemble content taken from the Web dynamically, edit copy, format pages and publish output for print and online versions. This is the heart of the solution and enables economic scaling of a micro zone publishing environment. ATS has developed this important component by leveraging its strength and publishing technology base.

Chicago Tribune is the first newspaper in the country to publish micro zoned products using the KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution. TribLocal micro zoned publications are already attracting attention from citizen journalists and local advertisers who will find it simple to reserve space and place their targeted ads.

"The ATS Microzone Publishing Solution is intuitive. It's efficient. It's scalable. It leverages our existing production and distribution systems. And it has exceeded our expectations thus far." said Ted Biedron, President of Chicagoland Publishing Co., a Chicago Tribune subsidiary. "This solution has been developed by experienced professionals who really understand the needs and challenges of the newspaper market. It provides the efficiency and scalability we need to drive incremental ad revenue by delivering the hyper-local content that consumers want. For the Chicago Tribune to grow, we have to get small. We have to get hyper-local, in order to reach untapped consumer markets and open new revenue streams with local, community advertisers. The ATS Microzone Publishing Solution provides the intuitive tools, and efficient, scalable systems we need to be successful in this initiative."

"ATS continues to be a leader in providing innovative application solutions and outstanding customer service to newspapers in North America. Since its inception, Kodak's commitment to excellence in adding real value to their customers' publishing operations has been outstanding," said Bill Page, founder of ATS. "We are delighted that they have selected to partner with us by integrating the best community marketplace solutions to help newspaper publishers enhance their local brand on the Web, increase advertising revenues, and provide a great user experience for advertisers, readers, and consumers."

KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution Drives Growth for Newspapers

Delivery of targeted content at neighborhood level will create new revenue streams

ORLANDO, FL, April 2007 - Kodak has signed an agreement with Advanced Technical Solutions, Inc. (ATS) to jointly sell and support a new KODAK Microzone Publishing Solutions that will significantly expand the opportunities for newspapers to serve both readers and advertisers. This solution creates growth opportunities for newspapers, enabling them to develop new products and revenue streams, as they compete in a changing media environment.

"Newspapers are seeing a shift in demand for more local news and are facing increased competition for advertising dollars. The KODAK Microzone Publishing Solutions leverages the strength of the Internet and the growth in citizen journalism to develop entirely new branded products delivered both as tradition printed newspapers as well as online," said Ken Swanson, Director, Business Development, Kodak's Graphic Communications Group. "Microzone publications allow newspapers to develop very narrowly focused printed products that appeal directly to neighborhoods or special consumer interests in a scalable, economical and effective manner. This opens new revenue streams for newspapers that do not cannibalize the existing products that they sell."

Using a platform developed by ATS, based in Acton, Mass., the KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution includes the KODAK Microzone Citizen Journalism Portal, KODAK Microzone Advertising Portal and KODAK Microzone Publishing Management System. The KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution will be demonstrated at NEXPO in the KODAK booth #2101 and the ATS booth #2115.

Chicago Tribune is the first newspaper in the country to publish microzoned products using the KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution. TribLocal microzoned publication launched in March and are already attracting attention from advertisers who previously rarely advertised in the larger metro edition of the daily newspaper.

"The world is change. Instead of publishers offering a one-way download of information to consumers, newspapers need to provide two-way communications. People are going to ask for what they want, and we need to deliver it in order to stay relevant, both in print and on the web. We expect the KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution to do just that, and to be an engine for growth for the Chicago Tribune," said Ted Biedron, president of Chicagoland Publishing Co., a Chicago Tribune subsidiary. "The KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution provides a way for readers and advertisers to intuitively communicate with each other and with us. From a print publishing standpoint, the solution provides an efficient, scalable way to handle the content that is provided by and for the community. It also enables us to leverage our existing distribution system."

Typical microzones consist of 5,000 to 10,000 households. The newly created print publications and websites allow local businesses and organizations to reach core audiences in a much more targeted fashion with news and advertising messages.

The KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution consists of three products that can be used as an integrated unit or function independently. The KODAK Microzone Citizen Journalism Portal allows local citizen journalists to submit stories, photographs and community event listings for use in print and online products. The KODAK Microzone Advertising Portal enables advertisers to create and place ads, as well as manage and store the ads they create, and pay for the media space using a secure credit cared system. The KODAK Microzone Publishing Management System enables newspaper publishers to assemble content, edit copy, format pages and publish output for print and online versions.

"The beauty of the KODAK Microzone Publishing Solution is that it is scaleable, and it allows newspapers to get much closer to their readers and advertisers, while at the same time automating much of the work required to produce a number of highly targeted editions," said Swanson. "News content can be ranked and selected by various ranking criteria and prescreened using keywords and phrases."

KODAK products are backed by KODAK Service and Support. Named Best Support Organization at the 2006 International Business Awards, KODAK Service and Support includes more than 3,000 professionals in 120 countries. These professionals are fully qualified to help customers control costs, maximize productivity, and minimize business risk.

Advanced Technical Solutions, Inc. Announces Partnership with The Toledo Blade
to Install Front-End Publishing Systems That Are To Be Used In Six Applications

ACTON, MA, May 17, 2005 - Advanced Technical Solutions, Inc. (ATS) a leading software developer and systems integrator of print and online advertising, circulation, editorial content and technical outsourcing solutions for the publishing industry, announced today that they have signed a contract with The Blade, in Toledo, Ohio to install the ATS MediaDesk Editorial System and Merlin's Content Asset Management System, ATS Circ2000 Plus Circulation System, ATS AdVisor Advertising System, and ATS AdsOnLine and AdFax Remote Advertising Management Systems. This will make ATS the sole supplier of all publishing systems at The Blade.

Last year The Blade found itself faced with several major application issues that needed to be addressed:

Circulation and Advertising Systems: Hewlitt Packard announced that they would be discontinuing support of their HP3000 platform by 2006. This meant that The Blade would no longer be able to receive support for their currently installed system, which would thus result in issues with running their existing advertising and circulation applications.
Design and Digital Workflow Management: The Blade decided to make Adobe products the company standard for their news editing application, forcing them to re-evaluate the current release of their editorial and production system applications.
Vendor Stability: One of the biggest concerns for The Blade was the continuing trend of vendor mergers and the potential for the elimination of further platforms that could impact the technology foundation at The Blade. Finding a stable vendor was paramount and is an integral part of their long-term technology plan.
Limited Human Resources: Another key component of The Blade's technology plan was to not increase the IT staffing levels. This meant that they had to find a vendor and systems that closely matched the existing technical skill sets. Existing hardware, software and database technical skills had to match with a vendor's database and system architecture philosophies in order to minimize the impact on existing staff and staffing levels.
Industry Standards-Based Systems: The Blade needed to update their aging proprietary systems with application systems built and developed based on standard platforms. This would allow The Blade to use the skills set already in place, rather than having to add specialists to their staff. The new ATS systems will also provide The Blade with the most up-to-date publishing software available.

The Blade's Director of Information Technology, Malcolm Edge, realized that he had to come up with an overall plan to resolve all of these issues. He developed what he calls The Blade's "core enterprise solution." Mr. Edge set out to find a core group of vendors that would have a vested interest in The Blade, realizing that they would be partners in The Blade's future and long-term success. Instead of simply finding vendors, Mr. Edge wanted to form long-term partnerships based on trust and stability, to the mutual benefit of both parties.

After researching his options, Mr. Edge found that there were some vendors that could offer pieces of what he was looking for, but ATS was the only vendor to offer all of the systems he needed, plus provide support for each system they offer while working closely with him and the existing technical staff at The Blade. Part of his "core enterprise solution," called for keeping the number of vendors to a minimum. It was also important for The Blade that future technology needs be reviewed and approved against the backdrop of the core enterprise solution, meaning that they wanted to be able to work with their partners to find solutions rather than 'mixing and matching' software from several vendors. This philosophy allows for a more tightly integrated workflow, as well as making it easier for The Blade to work closely with its partners to facilitate the support of new systems. ATS has had a relationship with The Blade since 1989, so there was already a high level of trust between the two companies. This trust made Mr. Edge very comfortable and confident in his selection of ATS to become what he refers to as The Blade's "applications partner," supplying their front-end editorial, circulation, advertising and remote ad management systems. Mr. Edge sees his extended partnership with ATS as a natural progression, leading to the benefit of The Blade as well as ATS. The Blade has selected AGFA as its "production partner." AGFA will provide all of The Blade's new prepress systems. Mr. Edge's plan has received full corporate backing and neither he nor corporate have "…wavered for one second. We have chosen ATS for very good, solid reasons, and we have not been met with any doubt or questioning," stated Malcolm Edge, The Blade's Director of Information Technology.

ATS' industry-seasoned professionals (many with experience working for newspapers) will be installing ATS' AdVisor Advertising System and Circ2000 Plus Circulation System to replace The Blade's systems affected by the loss of their HP 3000 platform. AdVisor uses one database, and will do what is currently handled by six different systems from two vendors. The ATS MediaDesk Editorial Content Management System will replace the Blade's previous generation editorial system. MediaDesk features database level integration with the Adobe software as well as a tight integration with the MerlinOne Content Asset Management System. ATS has created a seamless flow between the MediaDesk and Merlin systems, allowing for more editorial flexibility as well as greater content options for the user.

ATS has provided sophisticated application software solutions to the publishing industry for seventeen years, and is continuing to grow its business and the scope of its software applications. "ATS' user-friendly products allow users to accomplish more in less time, letting them work more efficiently and effectively", said ATS' Chief Operating Officer, Bill Page.

MediaDesk 3 Editorial System
Built on the latest client/server and Internet technologies, MediaDesk is a database-centered publishing application designed for the modern publishing environment to manage multiple file formats across multiple media. MediaDesk provides a seamless flow of content from all sources through the production process for print as well as for electronic publishing. An SQL relational database with a full-text search engine efficiently stores all data, from all sources and provides quick and easy access from anywhere within a newspaper's enterprise. ATS Navigator, the view into the relational database, supports an integration of either QuarkXPress or Adobe for page layout, and Microsoft Word or Adobe InCopy as the text editor. Features such as PageManager and Tracker allow for easy monitoring of page space and production progress. MediaDeskPrintServer enables the quick release of pages from newsroom workstations. MediaDesk allows for multiple editors to work in parallel on different stories, on the same page, at the same time. Messaging provides the editors with the ability to communicate with others instantly and offer remote assistance without ever having to leave their workstation. Plus, MediaDesk's modular design and flexibility easily adapts to changes in workflow, to meet new conditions and business objectives, and allows for the integration of Copydesk SE (with QuarkXPress) or InCopy (with InDesign). MediaDesk utilizes a Sybase, MS SQL or Oracle databases and can be used in Windows Server, and UNIX operating systems.

Merlin 4.0 Content Asset Management System
Merlin 4.0 is a full visual asset management system that handles various object types, including; photos, graphics, PDFs (with full-text indexing), QuickTime, .wav, .avi, and other multi-media types. Merlin's features include search tools, support for standard metadata, collaborative tools for use across the enterprise, controllable user access to function and content, and web-based distribution. Merlin users can access the system from high-end dedicated, licensed Mac or PC clients, or via web browser-based interfaces. The Blade will also utilize the Merlin TRAX option, which is an assignment database and management tool to support the assignment of work to specific individuals and management of a project throughout the entire creation process.

CIRC2000 Plus Circulation System
The CIRC2000 Plus Circulation System is comprised of four subsystems, together providing solutions for a complete circulation functional package:

Customer Service and Collection Subsystem: Primarily responsible for subscriber accounts. Accounts are maintained for all customers that receive products or services. Other functions within the system include subscription starts and stops, customer complaints and follow-up, online dispatch for redeliveries, recording and collections on unpaid accounts.
Delivery Subsystem: Allows for delivery of any products to subscribers, racks and retail outlets. The transportation part of the delivery system tracks the transporting of parts or whole papers from production plant(s) to intermediate sites (distribution centers and drop sites). Independent contractors receive the paper and deliver to individual subscribers or resell points on routes. The entire delivery structure along with editorial, preprint and ABC boundary structures is supported within the Delivery System, through the use of the boundary processes.
Estimate and Draw Management Subsystem: Responsible for determining which packages (unique versions of the paper and inserted materials) to produce and how many papers or packages will be needed. Because parts of the paper are pre-printed ahead of time, estimates for the pre-printed parts are generated using flexible historical formulas. For a given edition, package combinations are also created and maintained within the system. Because certain sections of the paper contain timely information, the Draw process may be run the evening before publication providing actual draw numbers for single copy sales and home delivery packages.
Billing Subsystem: Comprised of subscriber billing, independent contractor billing, contracts and contractor bond information. The Subscriber Billing area of Circ2000 is responsible for subscriber adjustments, payments, refunds, updating subscriber account balances, and generating subscriber bills. The Independent Contractor billing part of the system is responsible for maintaining independent contractor information such as: contracts, bonds and driver vehicle information, billing Single Copy Sales (SCS) independent contractors and paying Home Delivery (HD) contractors.

AdVisor 4 Advertising PowerSales System
Based on client/server architecture, the AdVisor Advertising PowerSales system provides a unified environment in which sales, finance and production share common concepts and data, with advanced functionality for every phase of operation. A shared central database and modern advertising framework powers the AdVisor application's order entry and A/R functions and delivers instant access to current and historical sales, customer and financial information.

AdVisor's advertising framework efficiently manages the workflow of multi-content and package buys cross-sold in multiple media all in a single order linked together through one application and one central database. This unified environment for all advertising functions simplifies the complexity of order entry, customer and contract administration, accounts receivable, production and reporting. AdVisor combines the workflows of classified liners and display, legal notices, obits, ROP, inserts and Web advertising into a seamless, cohesive process. PowerSales features for new revenue generation include: multi-content, package buys, automated photo processing, dynamic upsell prompts, style wizard and content upsells.

Content in entered in WYSIWYG format using Microsoft Word tightly integrated with the AdVisor application software. Insertion-based pricing is preformed locally to allow for maximum performance during all workload conditions. Site-controlled rates and installation set-up are configured through the AdVisor Rates Manager (ARM) and AdVisor System Manager (ASM). AdVisor runs in MS Windows or UNIX environments. Customer, order and financial information is stored in an industry-standard, ODBC-compliant SQL relational database providing a powerful environment for storing and managing a high volume of data, searching and extracting data for analysis using AdVisor's Reports Generator (ARG) with various methods of output, including print, fax, and email in PDF format or exported to applications such as Excel.

Designed to match the PowerSales features, AdVisor A/R brings the efficiency of the AdVisor sales application to Finance and Credit departments making it easy to manage, bill and pay Multi-Content, Package Buys and Split-Billed orders.

With the convenience of balance forward accounting and the control of the open item method, AdVisor A/R offers advanced customer and credit management, billing, payments and adjustments, disputes, aging, collections and write-offs, reporting and general ledger mapping and interfacing.

AdsOnLine Remote Advertising Management System
The AdsOnLine architecture is built on Java and JSP technologies that have proven to be scalable, reliable and widely used for server based web applications. Using these technologies allows for multiple platform support and will continue to support the interfaces to multiple front-end advertising systems that support H&J and pricing of ads. AdsOnLine is designed to allow for the use of standard web editing applications to design pages, making customization easy for newspapers to provide an optimal experience for customers purchasing an ad online. Advertisers can format their ads by selecting from a list of site-defined upsell ad styles with attention-getting logos, bold headlines, centered company information, borders and more. On-account advertisers can take advantage of pre-stored ad formats that include their preferred ad styles, standard signatures and logos. Complete with an ad-tracking database, AdsOnLine offers a full range of ad order entry functions designed to support your advertisers. AdsOnLine leads the advertiser through the ad order process with simple, easy-to-follow entry screens and instantly returns an automatic confirmation of the ad schedule, WYSIWYG view of the ad, pricing and status.

AdFax Remote Advertising Management System
AdFax is a fax management system designed to solve the workflow and productivity issues associated with processing faxed ads in classified advertising departments. AdFax receives faxed ads electronically, scans the image with standard optical character recognition (OCR) software, links customer account information and automatically faxes a confirmation to the advertiser. Faxed ads are reviewed in the editing workstation and routed to your advertising or production system for publication. AdFax has three major components that work together to solve workflow and productivity issues associated with processing faxed ads in classified advertising departments:

Remote Ad Management (RAM) System Server: The RAM server contains the AdFax software that automatically manages and processes faxed ads. AdFax can receive hundreds of faxed ad pages each hour for processing. Faxes are stored as TIFF images and converted to editable text using advanced OCR technology plus ATS' intelligent recognition software. The RAM System's Sybase SQL relational database stores the OCR-converted ad text and ad order information along with customer master tables. Customer information is quickly linked to the faxed ad order through the relational database, thus expediting the pre-publication processing done on the AdCheck workstation.
AdCheck: AdCheck is a Windows-based review and query workstation. Designated classified advertising personnel use it to retrieve and display faxed ads for review/edit, monitor the status of ads, and generate statistical reports on operator performance and throughput. Classified advertising front-end system markup can also be entered in AdCheck. The translation table in the RAM System assures that the composition is compatible with the front-end system. AdCheck operators can verify ad order field completion, pricing, and line estimates with a preliminary H&J from the advertising system. Operators can then release the ad for publishing, having completed the ad entirely in the AdFax system or send ads to "hold" directories in the advertising system for additional review and formatting. In addition, AdCheck operators can route text to mounted network directories for work to be completed on other systems. Advertisers automatically receive a fax confirmation directly from the FaxBack module, eliminating unproductive time spent by advertisers or sales staff's checking on fax progress.
HostAd: The HostAd interface software automatically sends new ads to the classified advertising system and returns confirmation of price, line count, ad text, and ad numbers to advertisers. The AdFax System accomplishes this through a high-speed communication process between the newspaper's classified advertising front-end system and the RAM System. HostAd integrates with two-way software on the front-end system to provide features such as H&J and pricing.
ATS's Chief Operating Officer, Bill Page and The Blade's Director of Technology, Malcolm Edge signed the contract on April 1, 2003. MediaDesk and Merlin are already in production; Circ2000, AdVisor, AdsOnLine and AdFax are on schedule to be fully installed and operational by the end of 2006. ATS is also providing The Blade with on-site training of their employees for each system as the installations are completed. "Working with ATS to find a long-term technology solution for The Blade to address these issues has proved to be a rewarding and fruitful experience," said the Blade's Director of Information Technology, Malcolm Edge.

About The Blade
The Blade was first published on December 19, 1835. It is the oldest continuing business in Toledo, Ohio. In fact, it is older than the city itself (Toledo was not incorporated until 1837.) The Blade was founded by a group of prominent Toledoans, and was originally only four pages per week. The Blade was named for the major export (the steel-bladed sword), of its sister city Toledo, Spain. In 1867, David Ross Locke bought The Blade from the founders. Mr. Locke had worked as an editor of several newspapers and brought The Blade national recognition for satires he wrote under the pen name of Petroleum V. Nasby. The Block family (the current owners of The Blade), bought the newspaper from the Locke family in 1926. The present Blade building was opened on May 1 of that same year. The new presses were started during a ceremony when President Calvin Coolidge touched a gold key in Washington, D.C. Today, The Blade covers 14 counties in southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio, with a daily circulation of 140,000 and Sunday circulation of 191,000 papers.

The Blade's website ( www.toledoblade.com ) was launched in 1997. In 1999 the newspaper formed a digital media department to manage the development of their site. It is the ongoing goal of The Blade to be the premier source of news and information about northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan on the World Wide Web.

Advanced Technical Solutions, Inc. Announces the Successful Implementation of 5 Installations, and 5 Ongoing Installations of its E-Commerce Online Advertising System, AdsOnLine & the Release of Its New Remote Ad Management Product, AdFax

ACTON, MA, December 8, 2004 – Advanced Technical Solutions, Inc. (ATS) a leading software developer specializing in advertising, editorial, circulation and technical outsourcing solutions for the publishing industry, is pleased to announce their ongoing success with their AdsOnLine system, as well as the release of their new RAM product, AdFax.

Released in 2003, AdsOnLine combines modern technology with the original online advertising software to provide the customer with the most advanced product possible.  AdsOnLine is securely interconnected with the front-end system to accurately price, compose and schedule every ad so that online payment can be reliably accepted.  The AdsOnLine architecture is built on Java and JSP technologies that have proven to be scalable, reliable and widely used for server based web applications. Using these technologies also allows for multiple platform support and will continue to support the interfaces to multiple front-end advertising systems.

“[AdsOnLine] is generating even more revenue and positive customer responses than even we, as the supplier, or our newspaper customers could have possibly envisioned,” said Product Manager, Kelli Chmielorz.  “Why? Not because of our engineering skills alone, but because we've been able to build on the knowledge learned from the original product while our competitors are still learning the basics of online ad sales.”

AdsOnLine has been successfully installed at The San Francisco Chronicle ( www.sfchron.com ) The Salt Lake Tribune ( www.sltrib.com ), The Scranton Times ( www.scrantontimes.com ), The Charleston Post and Courier ( www.charleston.net ) and The Janesville Gazette ( www.gazetteextra.com ); and is currently being installed at The Press of Atlantic City ( www.pressofatlanticcity.com ), The Birmingham News ( www.al.com/birminghamnews.com ), The Rockford Register Star ( www.rrstar.com ), Houston Community Newspaper Group ( www.hcnonline.com ) and throughout the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group ( www.nytrng.com ).

"The Birmingham News clearly understands the benefits and importance of owning this technology,” said ATS Chief Operating Officer Bill Page.  “All the revenue that is generated belongs to ‘The Birmingham News', rather than a revenue sharing model where a percentage of the online revenue is shared with the vendor of the online technology. We are very proud of our AdsOnLine technology and the fact that designing and implementing the system is so simple."

“AdsOnLine creates a convenient, always-on sales channel for advertisers and expands the Birmingham News reach to new advertisers beyond traditional business hours," Product Manager, Kelli Chmielorz.

AdFax utilizes the same database and information as the AdsOnLine system. AdFax eliminates the need for multiple paper-based fax machines.  The system receives faxed ads electronically, scans the faxed image with standard optical character recognition (OCR) software, converts the images into text files compatible with the newspaper’s existing front-end advertising system, links customer account information and automatically faxes a confirmation to the advertiser.  The advertisers can review and edit their ads on AdCheck workstations and then send them directly to the advertising front-end system where call center sales representatives complete them.  The Scranton Times, Charleston Post and Courier, Janesville Gazette, Birmingham News, Rockford Register Star, Houston Community Newspaper Group and the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group have all purchased AdFax systems, in addition to AdsOnLine.
